The 2026 GPS Tracker Buying Guide: 9 Questions Before You Buy
Every tracker listing promises “real-time tracking” and “high accuracy”. The differences that matter are buried in the spec sheet — or missing from it. Here are the nine questions we tell every buyer to ask.
One: what network does it use? 2G networks are being sunset across India; a 4G device with 2G fallback is the only future-proof choice. Two: what is the real update interval? “Real-time” can mean anything from 5 seconds to 2 minutes. Three: is there an internal battery, and does it alert on power cut — the first thing a thief does is cut the wire.
Four: is the device waterproof, and to what rating? Under a bike seat, IP67 is the minimum. Five: does it support an immobilizer relay? Six: what happens in no-network areas — does it store and forward, or lose data? Seven: is the platform included, and what do renewals cost after year one?
Eight: who installs it, and who supports it when something breaks at 9 pm on a Sunday? Nine: can the data leave the platform — are there APIs, or is your data locked in? Ask these nine, and the cheapest device on the marketplace suddenly looks expensive.
